A monkey implemented with Elon Musk's Neuralink technology has been trained to play Pong using only its brain — and there's a video to prove it.

In what will undoubtedly be either the coolest or scariest thing yous'll see all twenty-four hour period (most likely both), Pager, a nine-year-quondam macaque, is shown controlling the classic bat-and-ball game just by thinking nearly information technology. And not only does the applied science appear to piece of work, but it fifty-fifty seems to improve Pager's performance equally he's playing.

The 3-minute video explains that Pager had two Neuralink devices implanted, ane on either side of his brain, six weeks before the moving picture was shot; patches of hair tin can exist seen growing dorsum on his head.

Pager is initially shown controlling an on-screen cursor using a joystick and receiving a banana smoothie as a reward when he hits the right square. The video'south unnamed narrator explains that by mapping the neurons that fired as Pager moved the joystick, they were able to use a decoder algorithm to predict the monkey'southward intended hand movements, based on the information recorded by the Neuralink devices.

The team then asunder the joystick, only Pager was able to continue decision-making the cursor, this time using but his brain.

Next, the joystick was removed entirely and Pager was shown playing Pong using his listen alone — a game that the Neuralink squad have now dubbed "MindPong."

Musk, who founded Neuralink with Max Hodak five years ago, said dorsum in 2019 that a monkey had been able to command a computer using a Neuralink N1 implant; he's also demonstrated the technology in pigs. Merely this is the clearest proof yet that information technology actually works.

The Tesla boss intends the sci-fi tech to exist used to assist paralyzed people, and tweeted before today that the offset version "will enable someone with paralysis to use a smartphone with their mind faster than someone using thumbs." Later models, he claimed, will enable "paraplegics to walk again."

Whether Neuralink is every bit successful as Musk predicts remains to exist seen, but the monkey video is certainly impressive. Nor is it too far from previous similar experiments: in 2015, a paralyzed human used a brain implant and a robotic arm to drinkable beer, and equally long ago equally 2006, another paralyzed human being was able to play Pong with merely his listen and an implant.

As U.K. Editor in Chief on Tom'south Guide, Marc is responsible for the site'south U.Yard.-focused output as well as overseeing all gaming, streaming, audio, Goggle box, entertainment, how-to and cameras coverage. He previously edited the tech website Stuff and has tested and written about phones, tablets, wearables, streaming boxes, smart home devices, Bluetooth speakers, games and much more. He also spent years on a music mag, where his duties mainly involved spoiling other people's fun, and on a automobile magazine. An avid lensman, Marc likes goose egg improve than taking pictures of very pocket-sized things (bugs, his daughters) or very big things (distant galaxies). When he gets fourth dimension, he as well enjoys gaming (panel and mobile), cycling and attempting to watch as much sport as any human being tin can (particularly cricket).
